NEW YORK United States of America (USA) currently doesn’t see any way to revoke status Russia as a permanent member United Nations Security Council related to the conflict in Ukraine . This was stated by the US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

In an interview with PBS on May 6, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russia’s actions were “deeply painful” given its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, which cannot be easily revoked, despite calls from the Ukrainian president. Volodymyr Zelensky .

Russia has a permanent seat, and I don’t see at the moment any changes, but we will continue our efforts to isolate them,” he said. Russia TodaySunday (8/5/2022).

Previously Thomas-Greenfield accused Russia of abusing its veto power and supported a resolution, proposed by Liechtenstein, requiring permanent members of the Security Council to justify exercising their veto power. The resolution was adopted on April 26 but how it works in practice remains to be seen.

According to the resolution, the UN General Assembly must meet within 10 days if the veto is applied by any of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

The US has repeatedly made it clear that Russia will remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council. In early April, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said her country shared “frustration” with Zelensky over Moscow’s status but did not see it changing.

His remarks followed the Ukrainian leader’s address to the Security Council, which had gathered to discuss the alleged atrocities in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

Accusing the Russian military of war crimes – something Moscow vehemently denies – Zelensky called on the Security Council to either get rid of Moscow or disband.
