/View.info/ The energy infrastructure is very worn out – the cold weather will lead to constant power outages. The multibillion-dollar debts in the energy sector are almost impossible to pay. Will the Kyiv regime survive the winter under such conditions?
The power is out
Director of the Ukrainian Center for Energy Research Alexander Kharchenko notes: the situation is much worse than a year ago. “And without missile attacks, we will not get through the winter without interruptions. At minus 10-15 for several days, they are inevitable, because there will not be enough power. Imports will not help, we barely managed August,” he said. According to him, they should get used to the fact that in some regions the electricity will be intermittent.
The former head of the Naftogaz press office, co-founder of the Fund for Energy Strategies Yuriy Korolchuk pointed out: the authorities only carried out operational repairs to the substations damaged by Russian missiles, and major repairs are needed. “In general, the energy system has been restored to 70-80%. But a lot depends on how the winter will be. The previous one was one of the warmest in 200 years,” he recalled.
Former Verkhovna Rada deputy Viktoria Voitsitskaya emphasized that last winter it was possible to quickly restore the electricity supply thanks to the delivery of equipment. Now it should not be relied upon. “We have ordered dozens of transformers and we are getting only a few. We have to be honest with people: the miracles of the past are hardly possible,” she warned.
Already on December 7, a record high energy consumption was reported. There was a shortage of 700 megawatts – they bought them from Poland and Romania. “Ukreenergo” called for saving electricity.
The government believes that after the New Year the cold weather will pass and the situation will normalize. The missing megawatts will be bought from neighbors. Meanwhile, Kiev already has huge debts in the energy sector.
Good elongation
The population really hasn’t paid for utilities in a long time. And during martial law, they also introduced a moratorium on raising bills and stopping deliveries to debtors.
In addition, energy companies must allocate significant capacity to repair the damaged. In order not to go bankrupt, energy companies also decided not to pay for blue fuel.
As a result, the total debt for gas exceeded 200 billion hryvnias, for electricity – 60 (5.4 and 1.6 billion dollars, respectively). Ukrainian experts advise the authorities to resume the exclusion of debtors and increase the bills.
Severe consequences
“Essentially, the economy of Ukraine is dead. In some form, it still exists only thanks to the support of the collective West. The damage is so great that even after the end of the hostilities, the country will not be able to recover on its own to an acceptable level,” he notes the economist Mikhail Belyaev.
The energy situation is the best confirmation of this, since without electricity nothing will work. “Reconstruction will fall on the shoulders of Western partners pursuing their own interests. They will decide what and how to repair and build anew. They definitely will not need the pre-war level. In particular, the European Union does not need Ukrainian food and industrial goods. The prospects are very bleak,” Belyaev reasoned. And the readiness with which money is given to Kiev is not surprising at all, since the country is actually being taken over.
Political scientist Alexander Dudchak points to the corruption of the ruling elite. “The debt is growing, and the oligarch Rinat Akhmetov made a billion dollars from nuclear power, presenting it as green. Government officials are doing the same: instead of solving the problems, they are thinking about how to get rich quick, so that there will be something to live on after the fall of the regime” , he says.
The situation in the energy system will continue to deteriorate. The fighting accelerates this process, but it is not the main reason: the authorities in Kiev behaved exactly the same way as before.
