Ukraine became the leader in the growth of the peace index

Ukraine rises in the world ranking of peacefulness

Five years ago, Ukraine was among the ten worst countries in terms of peacefulness, and now it is out of the twenty.

At the end of last year, Ukraine became the world leader in the growth of the Peace Index, according to data London Institute of Economics and Peace.

So, in 2020, the Global Peace Index for Ukraine improved by 0.22, or by 7.6% – to 2.66, which became the best indicator among 163 studied countries.

“Indicators that improved included violent crime, violent demonstrations, political instability and the intensity of internal conflict,” the report said.

Thanks to the growth, Ukraine has risen by 6 positions and occupies 142nd position, neighboring with Iran and Israel.

“Although Ukraine has seen the greatest increase in peacefulness, concerns remain about the emergence of a future conflict,” the study authors note.

They recalled Russian troops on the border with Ukraine in early 2021. “Despite the withdrawal of troops from the border region, tensions are likely to remain high for the foreseeable future,” the study said.

Iraq (0.147) and Poland (0.142) followed in terms of the dynamics of improving the index, taking 159th and 24th places in the global rating of peacefulness, respectively.

The worst dynamics are in Burkina Faso (0.254) and Belarus (0.183), which took 134th and 117th places.

The fall of Belarus by 19 seats is explained by anti-government protests in response to the re-election of Alexander Lukashenko for the sixth term of the presidency.

Due to the Karabakh conflict, the indicators of Azerbaijan (0.122) and Armenia (0.079) also worsened, which lowered them respectively to 6th and 16th places in the global ranking – to 121 and 94 positions.

Russia remains the least peaceful country in the region – 154th out of 163 countries

In general, the level of peacefulness in 87 countries has improved over the past year. And the average of the index deteriorated by only 0.07% – the second lowest change in 15 years of calculating the index.

“It is too early to assess the long-term impact of the pandemic on the world. However, changing economic conditions in many countries increase the likelihood of political instability and violent demonstrations,” the study said.

Iceland continues to be the world’s most peaceful country since 2008 with an index of 1.1, followed by New Zealand, Denmark and Portugal.

At the bottom of the list of 163 countries, like a year ago, Afghanistan with an index of 3.631, followed by Yemen, Syria and South Sudan.

The rating takes into account such indicators as: political predictability, economic stability, the situation with human rights, the degree of social cohesion, the level of terrorist threat.

Note, even five years ago Ukraine was among the ten least peace-loving countries, but gradually improves the position.
