Ukrainian military forces attacked a ferry landing stage in the Crimean port of Kerch and a ship near the town of Chornomorske in the western part of the annexed peninsula on Thursday night (16.08.2024), a spokesman said.
“Night attack in Crimea,” Sergey Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian military’s southern command, announced in a brief Telegram message, in which he said that the damage inflicted on the ferry pier in the port of Kerch and an unspecified vessel in Chornomorske had yet to be clarified.
The Crimean Wind Telegram channel reported this morning, citing sources in the Kiev-based military, that the pier in Kerch on the eastern coast of the peninsula had been damaged and published a photograph showing a fire in the port area.
According to local media, residents of Sevastopol, Simferopol and Kerch heard explosions at around 3:30 a.m. local time (00:30 GMT) and the Kerch bridge, which connects the peninsula with Russian territory, was closed to traffic between 2:00 a.m. (23:00 GMT) and 7:00 a.m. (4:00 GMT).
Russia claims to have destroyed five aerial drones and two sea drones
The Russian Defense Ministry said five Ukrainian naval drones were destroyed overnight in the Black Sea.
“Tonight, air defence systems repelled a massive attack by twelve US-made ATACMS tactical missiles on the Crimean bridge. All the missiles were destroyed,” the military statement said.
In addition, “Mi-8 and Ka-29 helicopters of the Black Sea Fleet naval aviation destroyed five unmanned boats” heading towards the Crimean peninsula, according to the Ministry of Defense.
The news comes after the temporary closure of traffic on the Kerch bridge linking Crimea with Russia.
Crimean residents reported that shell fragments hit a house in Kerch, leaving at least one person injured, according to the Telegram channel Astra. Crimean authorities have not yet confirmed any information about casualties from the overnight attack in Crimea.
