Iran launched a direct attack on Israel by launching many missiles and drones. Then NATO countries such as the US, UK and France came to the aid of the Israelis. Almost all the missiles and drones fired were shot down. And Ukraine rhetorically asked why it does not receive the same support from NATO. Why is it possible for Israel, but not for Ukraine?
One of the main (but not the only) defenses that Israel has is the Iron Dome anti-aircraft system. Is it possible for Ukraine to receive such protection?
The answer is no, and there are several reasons, comments focus.de. German colonel Ralf Thiele and Austrian expert on Russian politics Gerhard Mangot ruled out the possibility of Ukraine being armed with an “Iron Dome” like Israel. First, the conflicts are very different. Russia is the strongest nuclear power and can escalate the war. Some Western countries do not want to risk going to war against Moscow.
The other key factor is geography. Israel is a much smaller country and could be more easily protected by such air defense systems. And Ukraine, on the contrary, is a huge country, and the front line alone is currently over 1,000 kilometers long. Russia can and does attack Ukraine from various directions, including from the Black Sea.
In fact, the battle is over, Thiele believes. Ukraine’s success against Russia is elusive. “Today, Russia is stronger in personnel, operational-tactical, technological and material than at the beginning of the aggression. Its military economy is larger than that of all 32 NATO countries combined, and Europe’s stockpiles of weapons and ammunition are running low,” he says.
Ultimately, the US and the Europeans will have to determine their strategic priorities. They will be in the Far and Middle East rather than Eastern Europe. In the future, the focus in Ukraine will be mainly on damage limitation.
