Ukraine and US Negotiate Strong Security Agreement: Updates on Talks and Potential Signing Date

According to Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Igor Zhovkva, two rounds of negotiations on a security agreement have already taken place between Ukraine and the United States.

“Today, the work continues, we do not comment on the progress of negotiations, on any deadlines, but you will see that this will be one of the strongest agreements. We are laying down mechanisms so that this agreement, like others, will work for 10 years. The only possibility Its cancellation may lead to Ukraine’s entry into NATO earlier,” Zhovkva explained.

At the same time, the head of the OP, Andrei Ermak, said that a security agreement with the United States will likely be signed after Congress accepts aid for Ukraine, but most likely before the NATO summit in Washington, which will take place in July.

“The goal is for each agreement to be really strong, to have its own flavor for each country, so this is not a question of time, but a question of quality and result,” Ermak said.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

In July 2023, at the NATO summit, the G7 countries signed a declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine. Several dozen more EU and NATO countries subsequently joined it. The declaration provides for the conclusion of a bilateral agreement between the signatory country and Ukraine.

The first security guarantee agreement was signed in early January 2024 with Britain. During a visit to Europe in February this year, Zelensky signed relevant agreements with Germany and France.

In addition, recently an agreement on security guarantees was signed with Denmark, Italy and Canada.
