Government Ukraine and Australia are in talks on a proposal to support the Ukrainian military by the tens Australian fighter jet who have been retired. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles called the delivery of the fighter jets a complicated matter.
Australia has ramped up its support for Ukraine on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Lithuania, pledging to deliver an additional fleet of 30 Bushmaster armored infantry vehicles at a cost of US$67 million.
However, Ukraine also asked to Australia about the condition of dozens of retired F-18 fighter jets, which could provide major assistance against the might of the air force Russia.
Marles said talks over supplying the aircraft were “ongoing”, but much more difficult than other forms of military support.
“Airplanes are a much more complicated matter,” he told the ABC news agency AFPThursday (13/7/2023).
“The situation surrounding the plane is quite complicated, but we will continue to have talks with Ukraine on that,” he added.
“What we give, and what we do, has to be practical and needs to make a difference,” he said.
Previously, Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, said in June that Kyiv was interested in the plane.
“There was a request for information,” Myroshnychenko said.
