Ukraine announced, on Monday, that its forces had regained more territory on the eastern front and were advancing south as part of its counterattack on Russian forces, at a time when Russia announced that it had thwarted an attack by Kiev with drones on its territory.

Hana Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defense, said that last week, Ukrainian forces retook about 3 square kilometers of land around the eastern city of Bakhmut, which Russian forces seized in May after months of fierce fighting, according to Reuters. Malyar spoke of an unspecified “success” in the direction of the villages of Novodanilevka and Novoprokopyevka in the Zaporizhia region in the south of the country, but did not give details. She wrote on the “Tegram” application that Ukraine has so far regained about 47 square kilometers of territory since the start of its counter-offensive in early June.
Russia has not confirmed the Ukrainian gains.
Russian mines and trenches impede progress
Ukraine regained a number of villages and residential communities in its three-month offensive, but Russian minefields and trenches extending over vast areas impeded the progress of its soldiers.
Malyar said last week that Ukrainian forces had breached the first line of Russian defences, and that the Ukrainian army now expected to advance more quickly.
Russia continued to launch air strikes on Ukrainian targets, including port infrastructure, and announced drone attacks on its territory.
Aborting the drone attack
In a context related to the war, Russia announced that it had thwarted a drone attack.
It said the attack was intended to target a power plant in Bryansk, which borders Ukraine.
