Ukraine Admits Inability to Produce Nuclear Weapons: Reliance on Western-Made Atomic Weapons

KYIV Ukraine admitted unable to produce nuclear weapons even though it used to be one of the world’s atomic powers.

This recognition was conveyed by the Head of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov. He hinted that Kyiv could ultimately only host Western-made atomic weapons.

Speaking on national television on Friday, Danilov was asked whether Ukraine could hope to regain its nuclear status, which it lost shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“Regarding the arsenal that was confiscated from us, let’s be realistic—this is next to impossible. And not only because of some political problems, but also because of technological problems,” he admitted, quoted Russia TodaySaturday (5/8/2023).

The government official of President Volodymyr Zelensky went on to describe the stockpile of intercontinental ballistic missiles used by Ukraine as a host of nuclear weapons as complicated, but noted that there have been cases when non-nuclear powers have been given nukes by NATO allies.

“I can’t tell you whether it will work in our case,” said Danilov, adding that any Kyiv attempts in this area will face serious obstacles.

Danilov’s comments contrast with those of Oleksiy Arestovych, a former adviser to President Zelensky, who stated in June that Kyiv could quickly develop its own atomic arsenal and obtain the necessary fissile material.

Just so you know, after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine inherited about a third of the country’s nuclear warheads, along with the accompanying infrastructure.
