The US has received information indicating that there are “currently” 8,000 North Korean troops in Russia‘s Kursk region, Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood told the UN Security Council today.
“With all due respect I want to ask my Russian colleague: ‘Is Russia’s position still that there are no DPRK troops in Russia?’ Wood pointed out, referring to North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The Russian ambassador to the 15-member SA did not respond.
The US and NATO have confirmed that North Korean troops are in Kursk, the Russian border region that Ukrainian forces invaded in August and still hold territory.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview he granted to South Korean media and published today, criticized the lack of reaction of the West to the arrival of North Korean troops in Russia to fight Ukraine.
“I think the reaction on this matter is non-existent…”, Zelensky said, adding that he was “surprised by China’s silence” regarding this military development.
At the same time, he stressed that Russia is in the process of reaching an agreement with North Korea to transfer “a large number of citizens” to work in Russian weapons production factories.
He went on to say that the involvement of North Korean soldiers in the war in Ukraine was confirmed by Moscow to Kiev’s Western allies through intelligence communication channels, stressing that Russia is testing the Western reaction and will involve more troops if the Western reaction is not strong.
