On the morning of this Thursday, hundreds of residents of Ukamau and members of the VIVA Housing Committee of Estación Central gathered in front of La Moneda, in an act of support for the government’s emergency plan headed by the Minister of Housing, Carlos Montes. Under the slogan “Decent housing for all!”, the streets were filled with people determined to make their voices heard in favor of an effective solution to the housing crisis they are facing.

The main objective of this demonstration was to deliver a letter to the government, expressing its support for the measures proposed in the emergency plan. Families affected by the housing shortage and precarious living conditions sought to make visible their urgent need for a prompt and effective solution.

In the letter, the movement of Ukamau residents expressed its appreciation and support for the Government for the effort and commitment shown through the Ministry of Housing to address the serious problem of the housing deficit in the country. They highlighted that the implementation of this plan is a significant milestone and an important step towards building a fairer Chile, where all families have access to decent housing.

In addition, they highlighted that the Housing Emergency Plan is the result of the struggle and mobilization of various organizations and social movements, including Ukamau. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together with the Government and the communities to guarantee the right to housing and build a more inclusive and equitable city.

The Ukamau community movement also reiterated its commitment to continue fighting for decent housing for all families in Chile. They appreciated the leadership and dedication of the Government in this task and trusted that, united, they will be able to achieve a society where dignity and access to adequate housing are a reality for all.

This show of unity and mobilization reflects the seriousness of the situation faced by many families in Ukamau and other communities in Chile. The lack of adequate housing and the precarious conditions in which they live constitute a problem that affects the quality of life of these people and demands an immediate response.

It is important to note that this act of support for the government’s emergency plan is only the beginning of a path in search of concrete solutions. The women of Ukamau and the VIVA Housing Committee will continue to work tirelessly to make their voices heard.

The call to the authorities is clear: it is necessary to act quickly and with commitment to provide an effective response to this crisis. Decent housing is a fundamental human right and guaranteeing it must be a priority for the government and society as a whole.

Today’s demonstration shows that the community is united in their fight for decent housing and will not stop until they get results. It is time for the authorities to listen and act to solve the housing crisis in Chile. Together, we can build a fairer and more equitable country, where all families have a safe place to call home.
