At issue is the increase in the cost of living, especially with regard to UK supermarket prices.
In 2015, after her husband’s death, Caroline Duddridge had the idea of starting to charge for the Christmas meals she made for her family. This year, she decided to raise prices in light of the rising cost of living, particularly when it comes to supermarket prices in Wales.
Last year, Caroline’s two sons paid £15 (around €17) and her three daughters paid £10 (around €11.5) for their dishes.
Due to the difference between what the men and women in the family paid, Caroline decided that, in 2023, she would increase the amount she charged her daughters by two pounds (2.30 euros).
“I raised the prices for girls (this year) by two pounds because I got some criticism from people saying I was being sexist,” Caroline told BBC News.
Grandchildren over five years old have to pay five pounds (5.77 euros) and those under 2.50 pounds (2.90 euros).
According to the woman, even asking for money for the dishes, she continues to make a loss because the amount she spends on purchases is higher. “This isn’t Christmas stuff, but just general shopping. It’s horrible and we wonder where it all ends up,” she said.
Despite having received some negative comments for charging for dishes, Caroline says that many internet users thought the idea was excellent and would adopt it.
