UK urges pregnant women to be vaccinated immediately

AROUND SURABAYA – British health authorities have urged pregnant women to be vaccinated as soon as possible, given that the Delta variant is more risky.

Jacqueline Dunkley Bent, UK’s Chief Obstetrician, wrote to GPs and midwives urging them to encourage pregnant women to get vaccinated as new data show an increase in the Delta variant being hospitalized with viral symptoms on Friday (30/7).

He called on pregnant women to protect themselves and their babies.

The World Health Organization’s head of vaccines, Kate O’Brien, said that pregnant women have been shown to increase the risk of severe disease.

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (RCOG) and the Royal College of Midwives have also recommended vaccination of pregnant women.

Public Health England has said it recommends pregnant women get the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines as they have been given to more than 130,000 pregnant women in the United States.

The UK has recommended vaccination of pregnant women since April but acceptance is very low compared to the general population.
