UThe British government has decided to increase the minimum wage in the country, giving relief to expatriates living in K and those who want to immigrate. From April next year, the minimum wage will increase by one pound to £11.44 (Rs 1193.41) an hour. The minimum wage, officially known as the National Living Wage, is currently £10.42 (Rs 1087.01) an hour for workers over the age of 23. It has also been decided to apply this rate to 21 and 22 year olds for the first time.

This would mean an annual increase of £1,800 (Rs 187,774.84) per year for a 23-year-old full-time worker and £2,300 (Rs 239,934.51) for a 21-year-old. The current minimum wage for 21-22 year olds is £10.18 (Rs 1,061.97) an hour. The separate National Minimum Wage for 18-20 year olds will increase from £7.49 to £8.60 (Rs 897) an hour. The wage increase will benefit 2.7 million low-wage workers. Apprentices will also get a raise, with a 20% hourly wage increase. Wages will rise from £5.28 (Rs 897) to £6.40 (667) an hour.
The recommendations of the Low Pay Commission, which advises the government on minimum wages, have been fully accepted. The move comes as household budgets are strained by the high cost of living.
