Shares in the UK closed higher at late trading on Wednesday as gains were recorded in the home building and home materials, life insurance and financial services sectors.

As for the weaker performer at the end of the trading day, the shares closed Bunzl PLC (LON:BNZL), down 0.96%, or 27.00 points, to trade at 2,793.00 at the close. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd DRC (LON:0593xq) fell 0.74%, or 8.50 points, to close at 1,133.50. Halma PLC (LON:HLMA) closed down 0.39%, or 8.00 points, at 2,048.00.

The number of gainers surpassed the number of stocks that finished lower in trading on the London Stock Exchange with 1,309 versus 466, while 470 remained unchanged.

Gold futures contracts for February delivery rose 0.00%, or 0.05%, to close at $1,825.45 an ounce. In other commodity trading, the February WTI crude oil futures contract for delivery rose 2.73%, or 2.08 points, to price at $78.31 a barrel, while the contract Brent oil contracts for February rose 2.84%, or 2.27 points. , and closed at $82.26 a barrel.

The GBP/USD pair lost 0.96% and traded as low as 1.21, while the EUR/GBP pair continued to climb 0.79% to hit 0.88 levels.

Dollar index futures were trading 0.36% higher to hit 103.98.
