The Russian Embassy in London issued a statement after senior British official James Heappey acknowledged that the country’s DU munitions had arrived on the battlefield, to be fired from Challenger 2 tanks also being supplied to Ukraine.
“James Heappey’s comments are grim evidence of the viciousness of the Anglo-Saxon policy of all-out escalation of the ‘proxy conflict’ that they themselves instigated in Ukraine,” the embassy said in a statement.
“He sarcastically stated that London was not monitoring the spread of these weapons and had no obligation to eliminate the consequences of their use after the end of the conflict,” the statement continued.
“It has now proven itself that the West wants this country to be not only a ‘shooting ground’ for the anti-Russian military, but also a dumping ground for radioactive waste – with all the ensuing serious consequences for the health of the local population and the environment,” the statement read. The Russian embassy went on to say that the UK government would be held responsible for the effects of the “poisonous munitions” and could not avoid accountability by handing them over to Ukrainian forces.
In an interview with RT last week, Russia’s envoy to the UK, Ambassador Andrey Kelin, warned that DU munitions would be a terrible thing for Ukraine’s agriculture and people, saying its radioactive residue could contaminate the country’s water and soil for at least six generations.
Both British and US officials have debated the alleged health hazards associated with the DU bullets – which use a solid uranium core to enhance their armor-piercing capabilities – and denied allegations that the weapons are linked to a spike in cancer and birth defects in Iraq.
