Britain and other Western countries are using economic sanctions to cripple Russia’s economy and punish President Vladimir Putin for invading Ukraine. The West is trying to pressure him to abandon what it calls a special military operation to demilitarize and “denazify” Ukraine.
In an interview with the Telegraph, Truss raised the possibility the measure could end if Moscow changed course.
“What we do know is that Russia signed several agreements which they did not abide by. So there needs to be a strong push. Of course, sanctions are a tough lever,” he said.
“The sanctions should only come with a ceasefire and a full withdrawal, but also a commitment that there will be no further aggression. Also, there is an opportunity to have a snapback sanction in case of further aggression in the future. It’s a real lever that I think can be used.” Channel News AsiaSunday (27/3/2022).
The British government says it has so far imposed sanctions on banks with total assets of $658.65 billion and Russian oligarchs and family members with a net worth of more than 150 billion pounds.

Truss also gave the impression that the crisis had brought the UK and the European Union closer after their relations were strained after Brexit.
“One of the points I would make about this crisis is that we have been working very, very closely with the European Union,” he said.
“Of course, there are some areas that differ with the EU. But fundamentally, we are all democratic countries, we all believe in the freedom and right of the people to choose their own government and we are very united in the struggle,” he added.
