Dr Lockwood, who studies the environment, geography and geosciences, said: “It was a sign that there was indeed something different about this particular dinosaur from the Isle of Wight.

“For more than 100 years, we’ve only seen two types of dinosaurs on the Isle of Wight, the plant-eating Iguanodon bernissartensis and Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis..”

“I was sure that the subtle differences between the bones would reveal new species, so I started measuring, photographing, and studying the anatomy of each bone.“

His task proved a success and he has since named the species “Brightstoneus simmondsi”, in honor of a village located near the excavation site, Brightstone.
