London The British supervisory authority for payment systems is examining the fee structure of the credit card providers Mastercard and Visa. The Payment Systems Regulator (PSR) announced on Tuesday that the fees that the banks of the respective dealers had to pay increased significantly between 2014 and 2018. According to market participants, the system and processing fees have been increased further since then.

The authority wants to take a closer look at these fees and the fees in cross-border interbank transactions. The supervisors explained the focus on Visa and Mastercard with the market share of the two companies: They processed 99 percent of payments with credit and debit cards in the United Kingdom.
