UK Parliament approves Prime Minister Johnson’s controversial Brexit law

It was quite unseen, when the British Prime Minister at the beginning of this month put a bill on the table that wants to reverse part of the exit agreement with the European Union. In concrete terms, it concerns the solution around the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, should a Brexit eventually come without a trade agreement. Because Northern Ireland – which belongs to the United Kingdom – borders Ireland – an EU member state – it had been agreed with the EU that different rules on trade would apply in Northern Ireland.

Johnson does not want Northern Ireland to deviate from the rest of the United Kingdom and fears a split. And so he came up with his bill, which was already approved at a first reading two weeks ago. Despite warnings from Europe, the House of Commons agreed with 340 to 256 votes.
