(CNN) About 900 Ukrainian Marines are on their way home after training with Royal Marines and Army Special Forces, the UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Wednesday. Part of the half-year plan to support the Ukrainian military.
The training would help Ukraine develop its own marines and improve its combat capabilities in the waters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in May that he would make the Marine Corps an independent military service and expand its military strength.
According to the Ministry of Defence, British Special Forces conducted amphibious operations and conducted exercises such as coastal raids using inflatable boats. He said it was the first time Britain had provided such training to Ukraine, and that the Ukrainian Marines were now working day and night in planning operations and executing raids.
In addition, it is pointed out that he received training in the operation of portable missiles, which are said to be next-generation light anti-tank weapons, the surface-to-air missile “Stinger”, and the operation of mortars and reconnaissance drones (unmanned aerial vehicles). The training included using explosives to remove defensive obstacles that impeded the movement of armored vehicles and other objects known as “Dragon’s Teeth.”
He said the backgrounds of the trainees were varied, and many were civilian applicants with no military service. Some of the soldiers were transferred from other branches of the Ukrainian army, some of them even experienced front-line combat.
A Ukrainian Marine who recently completed training said in a statement that “the drill by the Royal Marines was much more difficult than expected”. “I learned so much and now I can handle things I never thought I could do,” he recalled.
The ministry said the training lasted five weeks and included battlefield medical first aid, close combat techniques and tactical deployment as a unit.
The number of Ukrainian volunteers trained in Britain has reached more than 20,000 since the beginning of last year. It also said it had undertaken the training of 20,000 new volunteers, almost double what Britain had promised earlier this year.
The training of the Marines in the UK involves instructors from the Dutch Marines, as well as several other countries, he said.
