Ministry of Defence English said it had started an investigation after officials unwittingly sent emails reportedly containing classified information to allies RussiaMali due to a typing error.
Reported by the news agency AFPFriday (28/7/2023), the UK Ministry of Defense confirmed a “small number” of emails had been mistakenly sent, with media The Times reported that the email should have been addressed to the Department of Defense (DoD) United States of America but instead was sent to Mali.
According to the paper, the error occurred because the official sent the message to an address ending in a .ml domain which is the for domain Malinot to a similar US DoD domain address, .mil.
According to The Times, most of the messages contained trivial information, such as staffing vacation schedules for officials, but others contained detailed descriptions of British research into hypersonic missiles.
The delivery error came to light after the Financial Times reported last week that millions of US military emails had been mistakenly sent to Mali due to typos.
“We have opened an investigation after a small number of emails were mistakenly forwarded to the wrong email domains,” the UK Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
“We believe that these emails do not contain any information that could compromise operational security or technical data,” the ministry added.
“All sensitive information is shared on a system designed to minimize the risk of being misdirected,” the ministry said.
