UK Home Office: “The criminal lawlessness seen in some places in the US should not extend to the UK” – 2024-08-02 12:48:13

/ world today news/ This week, TikTok users shared videos urging young people to participate in an organized mass robbery of boutiques on London’s busiest shopping street – Oxford Street. The ‘rob JD Sports’ post on social media has gone viral. The call for looting spread widely within days.

The post urged people to wear balaclavas and gloves and warned: “Don’t come if you can’t run.” Although JD Sports was named as the target of the alleged robbery, other retailers in the area were also believed to be at risk. Stores were forced to lower their shutters and lock shoppers inside during the robbery.

A dispersal order was placed in the area from 11am on Tuesday until 10am on Thursday, giving police the power to keep people out of the area for 48 hours.

Earlier, London Mayor Sadiq Khan urged people not to participate in robberies.

He said: “I’m concerned about this nonsense we’ve seen on TikTok encouraging people to go to Oxford Street. I urge anyone who has seen it not to go there. Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into an area that may result in a high level of crime.”

Police made a number of arrests as officers clashed with the youths. The footage shows baton-wielding police fighting youths in the shopping area. At least nine people had been arrested by Wednesday evening during the unrest on one of Europe’s busiest shopping streets. Traffic was temporarily stopped and four mounted policemen, along with security, tried to disperse the bystanders.

British Home Secretary Suella Braverman has called for those involved in the attack on shops on London’s Oxford Street to be “persecuted” and thrown into prison.

She tweeted: “We cannot allow the lawlessness seen in some American cities to spill over to the streets of the UK. I fully support the police doing whatever it takes to maintain public order.”

Looting is feared to spread across south London and Essex at the weekend following the chaos on Oxford Street

Shop owners and residents in south London and Essex are bracing for the worst this weekend amid fears the social media trend of thefts affecting Oxford Street could spread to them.

A shopping center in Bexleyheath, south-east London, appears to have been the target of a series of TikTok videos calling for more shoplifting.

And balaclava-wearing social media users are urging people to ‘set fire’ to the beach in Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

The police announced that they are taking action in both cases. Police have issued a dispersal order in Bexleyheath and Welling to protect Broadway Mall. The center itself has informed store managers that it will hire additional security.

Many of you have seen on social media the potential threat of shops being attacked by gangs of young people intent on stealing goods.” says the message to tenants.

“They are targeting certain towns and Bexleyheath is on the list for next Saturday, August 12.”
