UK Government Reports Compromise Proposal for Controversial Part of ‘Brexit Law’ | NOW

The British government has a compromise proposal explained with regard to the controversial provision of the ‘Brexit law’, which makes it possible to overrule parts of the so-called Northern Ireland protocol. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has promised to first ask for parliamentary permission before resorting to the means of power.

Johnson reached an agreement on this on Wednesday with rebel MPs from his own ranks. Earlier on Thursday, the government explained the proposal by stating that it will only make use of the disputed provision after approval of Parliament and only if it is determined that the EU is not abiding by the agreements and thus the Northern Ireland Protocol ” undermines “.

According to the government, undermining can be the case if, for example, export papers are needed for goods from Northern Ireland to the United Kingdom.

The Northern Ireland protocol was drafted last year by the EU and the UK to avoid a hard border on the Irish island. The controversial bill, if passed, undermines parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, with which the British violate international law.

The EU wants to take the bill off the table before the end of the month, the British refuse. Brussels has not yet responded to the compromise proposal from London.
