“UK Government declares Nintendo Switch incompatible with Call of Duty, jeopardizing Microsoft’s deal with Activision Blizzard”

Long goes the controversy over the purchase of Activision Blizzard, but Microsoft has been trying to ensure that the creator’s games will remain, at least for a few more years, on the various platforms other than the Xbox. However, now the UK government says that the Nintendo Switch console does not support the Call of Duty game and therefore the agreement between the US and Japanese company may not make much sense.

Microsoft's purchase of Activision Blizzard is stalled and, after temporarily approving it, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has blocked this deal.  To prove that it does not want to make games exclusive to Xbox, the Redmond company signed 10-year contracts with several companies and platforms, one of which was Nintendo, in order to bring games like Call of Duty to the Switch console.
However, the UK government says that the Nintendo Switch does not support Call of Duty and that there is no way for the game to have the same quality of gameplay and content as it does on PlayStation or Xbox.  British authorities say they have no "found evidence to suggest that the consoles [da Nintendo] would be technically capable of running a version of CoD similar to Xbox and PlayStation in terms of quality, gameplay and content“.

This opinion forms part of the CMA's extensive 418-page final report on Microsoft's proposed purchase of Activision Blizzard.  In the opinion of the UK authority “overall, evidence shows that Nintendo Switch's features are significantly different from those of Xbox and PlayStation, including its technical specifications, ability to host games, and graphically intense pricing.  Xbox and PlayStation are more similar in that regard“.
On the other hand, in the report, the CMA recognizes that the Switch is capable of performing “some important games” like Doom Eternal.  But the entity says that Nintendo's console "does not currently offer the same set of graphically intense games that PlayStation and Xbox compete for… may not be able to offer certain graphically intense multiplayer games [como CoD]“.
The document indicates that, although the Switch could host a cloud version of Call of Duty, that same version would be lower compared to those running directly on the consoles, since “there are currently significant differences between cloud gaming and console gaming“.
