Goodwill Caravan charity has revealed that families from Sudan who have been evacuated have been left stranded after being evicted from government-allocated hotels. Dozens of families have apparently been told that they are not eligible for housing due to holding British passports. This has left them with nowhere to go, with some being left on the streets. While some lucky individuals have family members who can temporarily take them in, many have no one to turn to. The charity has called for urgent action to be taken to help these families. With the “loophole” in the system, they are not categorised as refugees and hence are not eligible for housing. Local councils may provide emergency overnight accommodation, but the families require longer-term housing to restart their lives. The UK government has stated its intention to disapply the Habitual Residence Test to UK nationals returning from Sudan, subject to parliamentary approval, and will provide £5million of lifesaving aid to people fleeing Sudan.
