The British government is allocating £ 705m (about £ 790m) to prepare the UK’s borders for Brexit. Minister Michael Gove (Cabinet Affairs) announced the package on Sunday after a meeting of the cabinet.
Some EUR 500 million is intended for the construction of ports and infrastructure in port areas, such as roads leading to the port, in the south-east of England. This will allow freight traffic with France to continue.
The United Kingdom will also set up more border posts and plans to hire 500 new border guards. Investments are also being made in new equipment at existing border posts.
“We will invest in specific infrastructure so that imports and exports can continue to run smoothly,” said Gove, who also said there was “movement” in the Brexit negotiations.
The borders of Northern Ireland, a major obstacle in the negotiations, are receiving particular attention. Gove expects to provide more details later this month.
The UK’s transitional arrangement with the European Union will end on 31 December. The British government has already announced that that period will not be extended, even if there is still no agreement by then.
