UK Driving Theory Exam: Passing Rates and Tips for Success from AA Driving School

Kamilla Benica, representing the AA Driving School, which holds the record for not passing the theory, says: “There is no doubt that it is a difficult test, and the commitment of the students to pass it is admirable. But with the right tools, it shouldn’t cost that much to be successful.”

Data published by the UK’s Department for Transport show that passing rates for the driving theory exam have fallen from 65% in 2007-2008. up to 44% in the financial year 2022-2023. year.

Prospective drivers in the UK must first pass a theory test in order to qualify for the driving test. Each theory exam attempt costs 23 pounds or less than 27 euros and lasts about an hour.

The test consists of 50 questions, of which at least 43 must be answered correctly. This is followed by a Hazard Perception Test, which involves viewing 14 videos and assesses prospective drivers’ ability to anticipate hazards in time. A minimum of 44 out of 75 points must be obtained in the hazard perception test.

Those who do not want to pass the theory exam should wait at least a few working days before they can try to pass it again. If you managed to pass the theory successfully, you must also be able to pass the driving test within two years, otherwise your knowledge in theory will have to be tested again.
