LONDON (Late afternoon) – Britain does not plan to postpone the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, a government spokesman said on Wednesday (March 31), in response to a Sky News report that the Summit could be canceled or radically modified.
The November summit in Glasgow, Scotland, was originally supposed to be held in 2020, but had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
“We do not intend to postpone the summit,” the spokesman said. “We are working on the basis of COP26 face-to-face in November, while closely monitoring the Covid situation.
Sky previously said that two government sources suggested the summit could be postponed a second time amid signs that the pandemic is worsening in some parts of the world.
Although Covid-19 cases are declining in Britain and the distribution of vaccines in the country is among the most advanced in the world, the government has already raised concerns about the possibility of new or existing variants being imported and causing a further increase in infections.
“The summit team is working closely with all partners and exploring what different scenarios can mean for COP26 and how we plan this, while putting the health of the participants and the local community first,” said the spokesman. del Gobierno.
The government is acting as if the summit is still ongoing, and Foreign Minister Dominic Raab delivered a speech to foreign and development ministers from around the world on Wednesday.
Britain hopes to use the summit to reinvigorate commitments to international climate goals, following a pandemic that has pushed the environment down the list of global priorities.
The summit was seen as a way for the post-Brexit UK to strengthen relations with the United States, which, under President Joe Biden, has again committed to agreements on climate change.
