UK deploys more than 1,000 soldiers in holiday strikes | Abroad

The British government is deploying around 1,200 military personnel over the holidays as border guards and to drive ambulances during announced strikes. Who writes the BBC. The military must help prevent disruption to frontline emergency services.

On 21 and 28 December, a total of around ten thousand ambulance workers in England and Wales go on strike. They want to impose higher wages. Actions apply only to reports of non-life-threatening situations. Despite this, the NHS has warned hospitals of a “massive disruption” to services.

Britain is currently being hit by a wave of multi-sector industrial action. The strikes come as workers face huge increases in energy prices, rising interest rates and high food costs.

Border guards strike eight times between 23 and 31 December. This should cause problems for people looking to travel during the holiday season.

Unions have criticized government plans to deploy military personnel. According to them, military personnel would not be “sufficiently trained” to keep front-line aid operational. According to the unions, the troops have “already enough responsibility” and should not be placed in such a “hostile” situation.
