UK: BBC to replace presenter Emily Maitlis after criticizing government

The British broadcaster BBC has replaced the moderator Emily Maitlis after her criticism of the government’s handling of the affair with the advisor Dominic Cummings. Maitlis was announced on Wednesday’s “Newsnight” show, according to the “Guardian“replaced by her colleague Katie Razzall.

The broadcaster justified the step with the fact that the program did not meet the requirements for its own impartiality. However, the program contained “fair, reasonable and thorough” journalism. However, it had not become sufficiently clear that the moderation was a summary of the outstanding questions. The employees were reminded of the guidelines.

Maitlis had voiced sharp criticism of the government around British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the previous day’s broadcast. Among other things, she had accused Johnson of “blind loyalty” with his adviser Cummings. “Dominic Cummings broke the rules – the country can see it and is shocked that the government can’t,” said Maitlis. With this, Cummings has all those who have tried with difficulty to stick to the rules of what fools look like. (Read more about the affair with Johnson’s key advisor here.)

Recordings of their moderation have been viewed millions of times on social media.

Opposition politicians from the Scottish SNP party criticized the statement, according to the “Guardian”. The party’s deputy head, Keith Brown, described it as “cowardly surrender of the BBC bosses”. The show should be commended for its investigative work, rather than criticizing it. The process is a cause for concern.

Boris Johnson, meanwhile, should be happy about the channel’s measure. He is a keen critic of the BBC and had announced that he would decriminalize the failure to pay the license fee.

The broadcaster has to be comprehensive anyway manage strategic and economic restructuring. Most recently, the house announced that 450 out of 6,000 jobs worldwide would be deleted from BBC News. The measures are also related to the so-called mid-term review 2022, in which politicians scrutinize the BBC and its structures and call for improvements.
