British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce the ban next week, the BBC and business newspaper Financial Times report.

The United Kingdom wants to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars five years ahead of schedule. Johnson brought the date forward from 2040 to 2035 in February, but will bring the date back another five years in a speech on environmental policy next week.

The Financial Times reported that the early ban would not apply to some hybrid cars. They can be put into circulation until 2035.

In the new cars sold this year, petrol and diesel cars had a market share of 73.6 percent. The market share of the purely electric cars was only 5.5 percent. The remaining 20.9 percent were hybrid cars.
