Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been dealt a severe blow as Britain’s antitrust watchdog opposed the deal, saying it would “harm competition”, particularly for cloud gaming.
The deal would have been the largest in the history of the video game industry if completed, but it faced fierce opposition from Sony, and was subject to scrutiny by regulators in the United States and Europe, due to concerns that it would give Microsoft control of electronic games..
Microsoft President Brad Smith criticized the decision, saying it was “Microsoft’s darkest day in Britain,” and threatened to move the company’s operations to the European Union, as it was “friendlier” than London..
