UI Professor: Vaccination for Autoimmune Survivors is Allowed : National Okezone

JAKARTA – Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia Prof Iris Rengganis said that Covid-19 vaccination for autoimmune survivor allowed if the condition is stable in accordance with the recommendations of the treating doctor.

“If it is controlled or stable, it is allowed to get vaccinated. However, if it has not been controlled, it cannot be, there is no specific vaccine for autoimmune,” said Iris in a webinar, Sunday (22/8/2021).

He added, autoimmune survivors are usually more frail or more easily sick than healthy people. If the autoimmune survivor is infected with Covid-19, then they are more likely to experience a more severe infection than healthy people who have not been vaccinated.

“Autoimmune survivors can be vaccinated if they are in a stable condition or their disease has been controlled clinically and laboratory. For drugs, it is minimal or has stopped taking drugs altogether,” he explained.

Patients should be declared stable by their respective doctors. Autoimmune survivors need to be educated whether they are allowed to get vaccinated or not.

So, before being vaccinated, autoimmune survivors also need to check the blood viscosity in the body, because usually autoimmune survivors have an increased blood viscosity.

Recommendations from the Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) also state that individuals with autoimmune diseases are eligible for autoimmune disease if their disease has been declared stable. Usually, continued Iris, doctors would not say that they should not be vaccinated but that they have not been vaccinated.

“Keep in mind that there is no vaccine that is specific for autoimmune. The reaction to the vaccine is individual. Any vaccine can be for autoimmune, “explained Iris.

Iris explained that Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are allowed to be used for autoimmune because they do not use adjuvants and other viruses such as Astrazeneca and SInovac.

However, Iris reminded that there is no vaccine that is truly specific for autoimmune. For side effects, he continued, it could happen because these effects are very individual.
