UI lecturer says honorary doctorate isn’t free, says it’s happening nationally

FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A lecturer in Political Science at the University of Indonesia (UI), Chusnul Mari’yah, revealed the secrets behind the honoris causa doctorate. He said academic degrees are not free.

“It’s not free,” said Chusnul, quoted from YouTube’s Abraham Samad Speak Up, Friday (25/10/2024).

That is why, he said, many politicians now have earned honorary doctorates. Although not all of them.

“Now all politicians are doctors honoris causa. Not all of them. Lots of politicians. “Then what does not pay,” he said.

He said that one of the reasons was the effect of the commercialization of education. Chusnul explained that UI had not accepted civil servants (PNS) for a long time.

“The problem is that UI has not accepted state officials for a long time. So there is no growth for state officials. But being a UI employee,” he said.

“That’s why tuition fees are going up, we’re getting more expensive. One such opportunity is commercialization. That’s a lot to get,” he said.

Another problem, he said, is that the UI School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG). The special multi-disciplinary postgraduate program he said was attended by many officers.

“So the problem is, is it only in SKSG? But the legitimacy must also come from the legislature, right? Doesn’t the rector know? Yes, you should know. “I don’t know,” he explained.

At UI itself, he said he had been questioning this for 25 years. When he was Head of the Research Programme.

“25 years ago, I talked about problems like this. When I was the head of a research program, when I was in the FISIP Senate, when I was in the UI Senate. “When he was in the UI Senate, it was 2008-2009,” he said.
