Uhlbergstrasse: A Historic Block of Flats Celebrates 100 Years with Long-time Tenant Helga Herter

A block of flats turns 100: the buildings on Freiburg’s Uhlbergstrasse were occupied around 1923. One tenant lived there for more than half of this time. And is celebrating her anniversary herself.

There was a double birthday to celebrate in the Brhl district: House numbers 3 to 13 and 4 to 14 on Uhlbergstrasse were built exactly 100 years ago, as was house number 7. That’s exactly where resident Helga Herter celebrated her 80th birthday on Tuesday BZ drew attention to the anniversary of the residential complex in which she has lived for more than 55 years and to which she feels very connected. The biggest gift, however, came six years ago: the houses were listed as historical monuments and continue to provide a home for many people. The idyll, hidden between Offenburger, Karlsruher Strasse and Isfahanallee, was started in the early 1920s by the Freiburg building association and is now part of the cooperative, which is now known more regionally as the “Breisgau building association”. In the meantime, the city of Freiburg was the owner for many years. The buildings were built in a garden city-like arrangement with small animal pens and gardens for self-sufficiency. Still largely in their original state, behind the hectic Offenburger Strasse with the noisy stop, they help walkers slow down. It’s worth taking a look into the courtyards – there could be a jewel hidden behind them.
