UGTM Calls for De-Escalation and Return to Negotiating Table in Moroccan Education Sector

While the national education sector is shaken by strike movements and demonstrations in reaction to the adoption by the Government Council of the unified status of national education officials, ” without final consensus with the unions“, the General Union of Workers in Morocco (UGTM) – Free Education Federation, calls for de-escalation and a return to the negotiating table.

In a press release released this November 8, in the middle of a three-day strike observed by the teaching profession (November 7-9), the UGTM invites the strikers to return to their work and to trust the executive. The objective of this approach, affirms the Centrale, is to bring stability to the sector, knowing that the first victims of these disruptions are the students.

« As part of sharing national responsibility for the current situation in public education, marked by demonstrations, and with a view to opening channels of constructive dialogue, taking into account the direct intervention of the head of government and its explicit commitment to finding satisfactory solutions for all through direct dialogue with the education unions, we call on all union members to suspend all forms of struggle and return to work as a sign of good faith“, can we read in the press release including Hespress Fr holds copy.

« This will provide the opportunity to continue serious negotiations under the supervision of the head of government,” insists the UGTM.

It is, however, important to note that this call from the Central Trade Union, affiliated with the Istiqlal Party (PI), does not necessarily mean the immediate end of the protest movement.

The education sector has been shaken by successive crises over the last decade, which has given rise to several protest movements sharing common demands and organized in different coordinations. One of these coordinations, that of contract teachers, has no less than 100,000 members and members.

The national march of November 7, 2023 in Rabat, which reached Parliament, brought together according to a security source, more than 40,000 demonstrators, who categorically reject the new unified status of the teaching profession.

It remains to be seen if the strikers will agree to suspend their movement, if the situation will calm down and if the government will be able to find a solution to this problem affecting one of the most vital sectors of the country.
