Gadjah Mada University (UGM) revealed that the so-called ‘Indonesian Future Studium Generale’ discussion committee was the rectorate and rejected the presence of the presidential candidate Anies Baswedan as an event resource person at the campus building last Friday (17/11).

University Secretary Andi Sandi assessed that the relevant committee at that time made a mistake, so it seemed as if there was a dialogue via WhatsApp showing a ban from the UGM Chancellor regarding Anies’ presence in this activity.

In fact, he emphasized that his campus had never prohibited Anies, who is currently a presidential candidate (capres) participating in the 2024 presidential election, from coming and taking part in the event. Moreover, attending scientific events as a speaker.

“After we investigated, the committee, without knowing what the purpose was, gave the name ‘Rectorate’ to the WA profile of the Master of Management staff who lent the Studium Generale event venue,” said Andi in his statement, Tuesday (21/11).

In the conversation via WhatsApp, it was discovered that the party referred to as the ‘rectorate’ had been contacted by the Yogyakarta Regional Police regarding Anies’ plans to attend the event.

Sandi added that his party had brought together the management of the MM UGM building and the DIY Regional Police. According to him, the police never issued a statement prohibiting Anies from coming to UGM.

“Anies is also from UGM family and the event continued to run smoothly yesterday,” he said.

Sandi emphasized that UGM is open to any presidential candidate who will attend UGM. He said this had been proven by the holding of a national dialogue some time ago which presented Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto and Ganjar Pranowo.

Sandi said that UGM has a standard procedure regarding the arrival of presidential/vice presidential candidates to campus ahead of the 2024 elections. If the context is a campaign, they must be invited directly by the campus, with event participants limited to UGM students, and there is no mass mobilization or campaign props.

With this case emerging, especially on social media, UGM asked the organizing committee to provide clarification. The reason is, this event is not an official UGM event, but only borrowed space.

“This is a learning process. Moreover, one of the organizing committee members, M Khalid, is also a UGM alumnus,” he stressed.

Previously, the committee for the ‘Indonesian Future Studium Generale’ event organized by the non-governmental organization (NGO) BersamaIndonesia claimed that they had not received a recommendation or permission from the campus rectorate to invite Anies Baswedan as a resource person.

Anies, who was invited in his capacity as Governor of DKI Jakarta 2017-2022, was then replaced by Thomas Lembong as minister of trade 2015-2016, also head of the investment coordinating body (BKPM) 2016-2019.

Muhammad Khalid, public affairs officer for BersamaIndonesia, explained that this event had been planned two weeks ago and he claimed to have included Anies’ name as one of the practicing speakers. At that time, his party coordinated with the MM FEB UGM study program as the venue manager and there were no records regarding the event. Khalid claimed that at that time everything was a ‘deal’.

Event flyers were then distributed via social media on H-2. A day later or Thursday (16/11) evening, the event location manager sent a WhatsApp message from the rectorate to the committee. The point, said Khalid, was that Anies should not be presented as a source.

“There is an editorial (sentence) that if it continues to be enforced like that there will be security forces who will bring order to this event or in simple terms it will be disbanded,” said Khalid at the MM UGM Auditorium, Friday (17/11).

Khalid also showed a conversation he had on WhatsApp with someone called the ‘rectorate’ contact whom he called ‘Pak Wija’.

The content of the conversation was to ask Khalid to confirm Anies’ arrival. Apart from that, there was a suggestion from the chancellor that the event be canceled if Anies was still invited. He said, a screenshot of this conversation had gone viral on social media X (Twitter).

In fact, according to Khalid, the concept of this event has been explained, namely so that the young generation is literate and involved in a public policy process that is oriented towards social justice. His party has argued that the event is purely an academic discussion and not a campaign forum for participants in the 2024 presidential election.

Later, the UGM campus claimed that no one from the rectorate had issued a statement rejecting Anies’ arrival. They actually questioned who the event committee claimed was the ‘rectorate’.

The results of confirmation with the MM FEB UGM Study Program as the venue manager also found that Anies’ name was not included in the activity framework and event schedule. It is said that the study program only asked about Anies’ presence, not forbidding him from coming to campus.
