UGM Experts Give Suggestions to the Government About Oil Scarcity, Here’s What They Say

JakartaScarcity of cooking oil occurred in various regions in Indonesia in recent months. This then causes the price of cooking oil to increase two or three times in the market.

So far, the government has implemented various policies, from setting limits on quotas for palm oil exports to regulating the distribution of cooking oil and cracking down on hoarders of cooking oil products.

However, the scarcity of cooking oil in the market still occurs so that there are long queues of housewives to be able to buy cooking oil at prices above normal.

Causing Factors Scarcity of Cooking Oil

Researcher of the Center for Community Economic Studies (Pustek) UGM, Dr. Hempri Suyatna, said the scarcity of cooking oil was caused by many factors, ranging from rising CPO prices, distribution disruptions to cooking oil hoarding.

“There are many factors. I think the trigger factor has emerged since last year, November 2021 due to the increase in the price of CPO (Crude Palm Oil) in the international market. This increase in CPO prices has then triggered many cooking oil traders to sell their products abroad rather than domestically. ,” said Hempri, quoted from UGM’s official website, Wednesday (16/3/2022).

In addition to the large number of products sold abroad, the scarcity is exacerbated by the large number of traders who play and make profits.

This of course makes the cooking oil distribution process not run smoothly.

“In many cases, we often find that there is a lot of hoarding of cooking oil, resulting in the distribution process being not smooth,” he explained.

How to Overcome the Scarcity of Cooking Oil

To overcome the soaring price of cooking oil and the scarcity of these products in the market, Hempri appealed to the government to do several things.

For example, by more aggressively carrying out market operations and taking various innovative steps, for example by cutting distributor lines so that they can reduce oil prices.

“Supervise business actors, including consumers. Do not let hoarding also occur at the consumer level,” he said.

In addition, the government also needs to strengthen the distribution monitoring process, including the issue of CPO exports to the distribution of cooking oil in the country.

“It is necessary to update the distribution monitoring process, especially since Indonesia is known as the world’s largest producer of palm oil,” said the Pustek researcher UGM the.
