Ugandan woman gives birth 15 times due to rare genetic disease – story of a tragic fate

Forty-three-year-old Mariam gave birth a total of fifteen times. The last time was at the age of thirty-six, when her pregnancy caused problems and one of the children subsequently died. She gave birth to quadruplets three times, triplets four times and six more twins. This unusual phenomenon is caused by a rare genetic disease that causes hyperovulation due to enlarged ovaries. At the age of forty, Mariam therefore underwent an operation to prevent further pregnancy.

Cruel fate

Mariam’s life was trying from the very beginning. Three days after her birth, her mother left her, so she lived with only her father and five siblings. The father soon found a new wife, but she did not like the children and her hatred culminated in a heinous act – she mixed pieces of glass into their food. They all died and Mariam was the only one who survived because she was staying with relatives. After this tragic event, the African woman longed for a large family to make up for everything. However, she expected to have five or six children, which is quite common for Ugandan women.

She is completely alone with the children

At the age of twelve, Mariam was forced to marry a forty-year-old man. A year later she gave birth to twins for the first time. Already at that time, the doctor warned her that she had unusually large ovaries and that contraception could cause her health problems. Family life wasn’t worth anything either. Her husband treated her rudely and eventually left her with all the money. He reportedly feared the responsibility of providing for so many children. Mariam was thus left alone to care for her children and had to move around a lot to support them all. She worked as a hairdresser, decorator, collected scrap, burned local liquor or sold herbs. All her earnings will go towards food, clothes and school fees. Mairam lives with her children in four houses in the middle of coffee plantations. Even by Ugandan standards, her family is huge, and the woman is rightfully nicknamed Mama Uganda.
