Ugandan Foreign Minister Jeje Odongo on Wednesday praised China’s continued support for the development of his country’s infrastructure.
Mr. Odongo made the remarks when receiving the credentials of the new Chinese ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, according to a ministry statement released in Kampala.
The Ugandan minister praised the relationship between the two countries, which he considers to be of a historic nature and which has reached the level of a comprehensive cooperative partnership.
According to him, China has implemented several infrastructure projects such as the construction of hydroelectric dams and roads, the extension of the Entebbe international airport and the development of industrial parks. Mr. Odongo recalled that the construction of a standard gauge railway line remained a priority project for Uganda.
According to the Ugandan foreign minister, his country wants to strengthen connectivity and trade by introducing direct flights between Uganda and China (Guangzhou).
He said Uganda was determined to implement the results of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FCSA) and to play an active role in the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Chinese ambassador assured that China and Uganda continued to strengthen their ties in the political, security, economic, social, cultural and scientific fields.
Zhang noted that the construction of several Chinese-funded infrastructure projects has been completed while others are still underway. He noted that the Kampala-Entebbe expressway and the 183 MW Isimba hydroelectric plant had been completed while the 600 MW Karuma hydroelectric plant is still under construction.
According to Zhang, China is determined to continue supporting Uganda in its efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since the pandemic hit Uganda in March 2020, China has donated medical supplies and 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the country.
