At least three civilians have been killed in two explosions in the Ugandan capital Kampala. Three suicide bombers were also killed in the blasts, local police said. More than thirty people were injured.
The explosions would have followed each other within 3 minutes. A possible attack on a third target was foiled by police, who pursued and disarmed a suspected suicide bomber.
Reuters news agency reports that one suicide bomber carried out the first explosion near a checkpoint at the police station, killing two civilians. Then two suicide bombers on motorcycles detonated a second bomb, killing another person.
Threat not gone yet
At least 33 people are being treated at the city’s main public hospital. Five of them are seriously injured, a police spokesman told the AP news agency. Many people are said to have left the city after the motorcycle attacks. The threat of more suicide attacks has not yet passed, according to the police spokesman.
The attack has not yet been claimed. The al-Qaeda-affiliated Somali terrorist group al-Shabaab has previously carried out deadly attacks in Uganda. Last month, the Islamic State-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) claimed an attack in Uganda. The police spokesperson also holds ADF responsible for the attack on the basis of information.
