Ufo and Freddy will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award in Comedy
The association of comedians “Comedy Latvia” awarded the “Grābeklis” award for lifetime contribution to long-time humor experts Ufo and Fred. Andris Freidenfelds remembers that in the late 1990s, in tandem with his joke partner Kaspars Upacieri, he started hosting the “BB breakfast” morning program of “Radio SWH”, which for many became a widely listened daily dose of laughter.
“In the past, there was usually one person who hosted some programs and invited someone for an interview, but now there are two of them opposite and there is no respite for the listeners, and we are simply rushing to the top. However, those were also the first years of independence, when the Soviet Union was over and, in the end, but that old party guard held the mass means in hand and did not let loose. Now we understood that, well, now it is allowed.
We sit down and mumble something without a plan or set schedule and drama. Now is the time of political correctness and all kinds of diversity,” Freudenfeld recalled the beginnings of the comedy duo.
He reasoned that there is no shortage of challenges for the comedian community due to political correctness, but at the same time, in his opinion, the comedy genre has not yet capitulated in Latvia.
“Initially, I was nothing and was drafted into the Russian army.
I served for two years, but I realized already there that with jokes my life is easier, and immediately all roads are open. Others went to dig holes, I went to the club to joke. Yes, once you have a sense of humor that you can use, it helps tremendously in life.
But no matter how young you feel and how terrible jokers you are, you still have to understand that it’s time to leave… (laughs) sto take the rake of a lifetime’s investment and go to some meadow to rake hay, well, sort of,” said Freudenfeld
The presentation of Latvian comedy awards will be held for the third time and this year the organizers of the event, the comedy association “Comedy Latvia”, are also celebrating their tenth anniversary. Its manager, Edgars Žukovskis, assessed that the past year was especially full of new stand-up shows.
“There are more jokers than ever before stand up in the performance scene, the number of performances is increasing, and the tours around Latvia are also becoming more and more voluminous. Because we want to say that this year 2023 has really been a breakthrough, including the arrival of UFOs stand up in the field of comedy, Zane Vadgiņa and Ainārs Ančevskis are actively traveling around Latvia with stand-up comedy. There are really more and more players emerging, which is very good,” Zhukovsky said.
When asked what Latvian comedians joked about more in their shows, improvisations or sketches last year, Žukovskis stated that there are still very few jokes about politics in Latvia, but the most relevant topics are human relationships, everyday events in which the audience can easily see themselves and laugh at it. .
“I think good comedy is one that I, as an audience member, can relate to. If the joke is about cooking and the comedian is talking about how he burned the food, then I can subconsciously think all the time that this has happened to me and I I can empathize with this artist, drawing parallels with my own life. These are the funniest jokes, when people and those present look at each other and say “ha ha, it’s you or it’s me”. It’s a good comedy,” said Zhukovsky.
The presentation of Latvian comedy awards “Grābeklis” in four categories and performances by various comedian associations will take place on the evening of Sunday, January 7, at the VEF Palace of Culture.
