Uffe Lyngaae has chosen to step down as head of the Danish communications agency Publico, a company he founded in 2001. After leading the company for more than two decades, he realized that he could not to meet the changing expectations of its younger workforce. This reports Berlingske.

New generation, new requirements
At the beginning of his career as a manager, Lyngaae felt that he had a good understanding of what his employees wanted. They appreciated a leader who was available but not involved in day-to-day work. However, this changed when the age difference between him and his staff became greater.
– The youth seek sparring recognition, proactive and feedback more often. There are needs that I can no longer meet, Lyngaae explains.

“Primadonna Level”
The generation that is now entering the job market, often called Generation Z, has expectations, according to management consultant Karen Christina Spuur, completely natural.
– They are used to meeting curiosity and communication, as they have experienced in the school system, said Spuur to Berlingske.
Lyngaae has taken this vision to heart and admits that it needs to change management thinking. In the past, he would not accept the need for what he calls a “prima donna level” of sparring, but today he sees it differently.
– I have become wiser. Young people make well-considered requests for their professional and personal development, demands that all modern knowledge-based companies should be able to deliver, says Lyngaae.
Leave the responsibility to others
Despite its efforts to change, Lyngaae has decided to hand over HR duties to two of its employees, who it believes are better equipped to deliver “modern good management”. .
– I don’t think that, regardless of the management courses I take, I can deliver the required level of attention. I can’t even manage it in my own relationship, he says to Berlingske.
Lyngaae will continue to play a role in the company, but recognizes that it is time to relinquish leadership in terms of personnel management.
