Abramovich, who has owned Chelsea since 2003, had previously announced that he wanted to sell the club. The reason for this is external pressure due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the threat of sanctions from the British government. Abramovich bought Chelsea for almost $190m in 2003 and has reportedly turned down £2.2bn (€2.65bn) bids for the sale.
McGregor tweeted in response to a WhatsApp message from an unknown sender, which read: “Chelsea for sale, £3bn. Let’s buy it.” It’s not the first time the UFC star has expressed interest in buying a Premier League club.
In April 2021, MCgregor already expressed interest in acquiring Manchester United.
“Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?”, tweetete McGregor damals.
Afterwards, however, McGregor’s announcements had no consequences. It remains to be seen whether the MMA fighter will act this time. But he probably needs financially strong co-investors. Because even if that Forbes Magazine for 2021 with income of 180 million dollars as the best-paid athlete – the billions that Abramovich will probably call for Chelsea FC (whether it is actually three billion pounds remains to be seen), the 33-year-old is unlikely to raise it himself be able.
