(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Chang-yong = The era of McGregor (33, Ireland), the flagship star of UFC, the world’s largest mixed martial arts group, is coming to an end.
McGregor was defeated by Dustin Poirier (32, USA) in the second round of TKO at the main event of’UFC 257′ held on Yas Island, an artificial island in Abu Dhabi, UAE on the 24th (Korean time).
McGregor was defeated for the fifth time (22 wins). Since joining the UFC, this is the third defeat after Nate Diaz and Habib Nurmagomedorf.
This is the first time that McGregor, who boasted the strongest batting ability, has been defeated by KO or TKO.
Representative Dana White planned to have Nurmagomedorf, who declared his retirement with a flawless record of 29 matches, overturned his retirement, and played a lightweight title fight with the winner of this confrontation.
The UFC drew a picture in which McGregor defeated Poirier and played the second game with Nurmagomedov, but McGregor’s defeat made it inevitable that even the grand plan was disrupted.
Poirier succeeded in sulking against McGregor after six years and four months.
Poirier was defeated by TKO in the first round of his first match against McGregor at UFC 179 in September 2014.
Poirier’s victory on that day made him approach the position of the lightweight champion, who became virtually non-juminist when the current champion Nurmagomedov declared his retirement.
