The association is being forced to change its decision on allowing the Russian youth team to compete. The majority of UEFA members spoke out against this decision while the war in Ukraine continues.
UEFA unexpectedly raised the issue at an association meeting without giving members the opportunity to discuss it in advance. The federations didn’t like it. It was mentioned in the “any other questions” section.
The issue of admitting Russian national teams will be discussed at the next meeting of the UEFA executive committee on October 10. Perhaps the decision will be changed as a lot of attention is focused on this issue.
The meeting will also officially confirm the holding of Euro 2028 in the UK and Ireland.
UEFA approval of Russian youth teams
At the end of September, the UEFA executive committee decided to immediately return the Russian youth (U-17) team to competition, arguing that children should not be punished for actions for which responsibility lies with adults. All matches of Russian teams will be held without the country’s flag, anthem, national playing uniform and not on Russian territory.
“It is particularly unfortunate that, due to the ongoing conflict, an entire generation of minors has been denied the right to play in international football. For these reasons, the UEFA Executive Committee has decided that Russian teams consisting of minor players will be readmitted to competition during this season. “In this regard, the Executive Committee asked the UEFA administration to propose a technical solution that would allow the restoration of the Russian U17 teams (both girls and boys), even if the draw has already taken place,” UEFA said.
