UEFA Women’s EURO in Summer 2022 | UEFA

The UEFA Executive Committee confirmed today that UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 will be held in England from July 6th to 31st, 2022. The aim is to keep the originally planned venues during this period.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said of the decision: “When we urgently had to decide to postpone UEFA EURO 2020, we always had the effects on UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 in mind. We have carefully considered all options. In our considerations, our commitment to the growth of women’s football was always in the foreground. By postponing UEFA Women’s EURO by one year, we are ensuring that the flagship competition for women’s football remains the only major tournament of the summer and thus receives its well-deserved attention. ”

The relocation of the Women’s European Championship finals follows UEFA’s announcement on March 17 that UEFA EURO 2020 will take place in 2021 due to the global outbreak of COVID-19. The health of all concerned is the top priority for the European football governing body, which also hopes that the current national championships and European competitions can be completed. In advance, extensive discussions were held with the organizers of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. UEFA and the English Football Association (FA) will continue to work closely with the organizers to offer an eventful summer of top sport.

Nadine Kessler, head of the UEFA women’s football department, commented on the decision: “Together with the FA, we asked ourselves the all-important question: What is the best solution for women’s football? Since the Olympic Games will now be held in the summer of 2021, we are convinced that a postponement to 2022 is in the best interest of the tournament, the players, the fans, our women’s football partners and those involved in all areas and at all levels of women’s football. UEFA Women’s EURO is Europe’s largest women’s sports event and also one of the world’s largest sports events. That is why she needs and deserves her own stage. The decision enables us to host a globally recognized tournament, maximize media coverage and increase visitor numbers. In this way, we live up to our main goal of inspiring the next generation of players. The year 2022 was also chosen in order to be able to carry out further advertising and partner activities. This would have been much more difficult due to the large number of sporting events in summer 2021. It is a clear sign of loyalty to our committed partners who have accompanied us since our decision to market women’s and men’s soccer separately. ”

Baroness Sue Campbell, FA’s women’s football director, said: “As a country and as a football association, we are proud to host UEFA Women’s 2021. It is our firm intention to offer all players, employees and fans a unique football experience when we greet the best of European women’s football in England. But sporting events have to adapt accordingly, since the world faces greater challenges than sport. In this unprecedented time, it is important to reaffirm that public health remains an absolute priority for all of us. After the talks with UEFA, we are therefore fully behind the decision to postpone UEFA Women’s 2021. We share the view that this decision will ultimately benefit the tournament as a separate window is created in the game calendar. Last but not least, we all have more time in this challenging situation to host a one-off event worthy of a European Championship finals in our own country. We have made great strides in tournament planning at the moment and would like to thank the host cities and stadiums in particular for their continued commitment and support. Our thanks also go to the Commonwealth Games Federation for their constructive cooperation in coordinating the new data. We are pleased to be able to provide a suitable framework for top performances in women’s sports at both sporting events. The dialogue with the cities, stadiums and our partners will continue in the coming months. The goal will be to host a European Women’s Championship finals on home soil in 2022 that will break all records. We are convinced that the wait is worthwhile. “

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin added: “I would like to thank the FA, the local organizing committee and the UEFA member associations who share our belief that women’s football as a whole will benefit from the tournament’s postponement to 2022. The soccer family appears once more with a unified voice. We can look forward to a European football summer not only in 2021 but also in 2022. We thank FIFA and the Commonwealth Games Federation for their cooperation, in which we were able to agree on the game data. ”

Further information, including any changes to the game calendar or the name of the tournament, will be announced in due course.
