UEFA Reverts to 23-Player Roster Rule for EURO 2024: Impact on Teams and Qualification Matches

As reported by the MTI agency, the European Football Association (UEFA) is introducing an old rule that states that each team can have no more than 23 players on its roster.

At EURO 2021, coaches could nominate up to 26 players for their squad. The reason was the coronavirus pandemic, and the increase in the number of football players was to ensure that the potential infection of some team members had as little impact on the team’s performance as possible.

The same rule also applied at last year’s world championship due to the unusual timing of the tournament and the constant presence of covid.

With the pandemic no longer posing a significant threat to players, UEFA has announced that at next year’s European Championships in Germany, which will take place from June 14 to July 14, teams will again have only 23 players available.

Slovakia is close to sealing progress to the European Championship, in the remaining two qualification matches it still needs at least a point, respectively that Luxembourg and Iceland do not score fully.
