Italy without Champions League: Lazio, Napoli and Inter in order they were eliminated from the most prestigious cup, in the quarterfinals there are no Serie A clubs. A step back after the exploit of a year ago, when three teams (Napoli, Inter and Milan) monopolized half of the scoreboard, with two derbies in the quarter-finals and semi-finals and with Inter as finalists against City.
Club World Cup 2025, how it works and the qualified teams. Inter and Juve are the two Italians
The Italian flop complicates but does not completely compromise the race for the fifth team in the nuova Champions League 2024/05, which will have 36 teams (no longer 32) and which will assign two extra places to the two countries that have obtained the highest national ranking in the 2023/24 season. In this ranking, Italy remains in the lead but the advantage is obviously narrowing.

3) England 15,000 (6/8)
4) France 14,416 (3/6)
5) Spain 14,187 (4/8)

7) Belgium 12,400 (2/5)
What does Italy need to have 5 teams in the Champions League
The 8 teams left in the running for the Champions League are 3 Spanish (Real MadridAtletico Madrid and Barcelona), 2 English (Arsenal and Manchester City), 2 German (Bayern e Borussia Dortmund) and a French one (Psg). Spain are relatively scary: in the other cups they only have the Villarreal which however is destined to come out against the Marseille. And the three Spanish teams in the Champions League risk meeting in a derby (or two) until the Wembley final. Furthermore, Spain divides its points by 8, the number of teams competing in the Cup at the start of the season. Recovering 2.5 points from Italy can be very difficult.
The real threats are Germany and England, the unknown is France.
Let’s start from Germany. Bayern and Borussia Dortmund can reach the bottom of the Champions League, while Freiburg and Leverkusen cultivate legitimate ambitions in the Europa League. The match between Freiburg and West Ham (1-0 for the Germans in the first leg) is a sort of Germany-England play-off in terms of ranking.
England still have 6 teams in the running. One, Brighton, however, must overcome the 4-0 defeat suffered in Rome: this match is also a key challenge in the race between the two countries and, in addition to the qualification which seems to be in the hands of the Giallorossi and which is worth a bonus point, it will also be important the result of the pitch (there are still two points up for grabs). The other English teams can get to the bottom: Arsenal and City in the Champions League, Liverpool and West Ham in the Europa League, without forgetting Aston Villa in the Conference (starting from 0-0 against Ajax). The only obstacle: England, like Spain, divides its spoils by 8. So for example, a draw between Brighton and Rome is worth a little more for Italy. But England remains the country most likely to overtake us.
Finally, France: they only have three teams in the running, but they have one in each cup. PSG, Marseille and Lille can theoretically earn three finals. And France divides its spoils by 6, not by 7. Here, Italy, by bringing 3 or 4 teams ahead in the other two cups, can reasonably think of maintaining the advantage.
How the UEFA ranking is calculated
All victories in the group stages of the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League are worth 2 points.
Wins in qualifiers and play-offs are worth 1 point.
Draws in the group stage are worth 1 point.
Draws in qualifiers and play-offs are worth 0.5 points.
Added to this are the bonuses:
in the Champions League, 4 points for participation in the group stage and 4 points for access to the round of 16;
in the Europa League, 4 points for the group winner and 2 for the second place;
in the Conference League, 2 points for the group winner and 1 for the second place;
in the Champions League and Europa League, one point for each direct elimination round;
in the Conference League, one point for reaching the semi-finals and one for reaching the final.
